Positioning Your Wireless Router

The location of your router has a big impact on wireless performance.  A good location is one which reduces the distance between client and router, and also minimizes signal interference and obstructions.

When deciding where to position your wireless router, consider the following:

  • Router needs to be as close to the center of your coverage area as possible.
  • Router should be placed on a tall shelf or mounted near the ceiling to prevent obstruction caused by furniture and other items.

  • Router should be as far away from neighbor’s wireless networks as possible.  Router should also be on a different channel than nearby networks.

  • Router should be kept away from household devices like cordless phones and microwaves.
